Towards a New ILS
by David L. Polodna
After nearly a year
of preliminary investigations and some detours along the way, the
twenty-eight libraries participating in WRLSWEB, our shared technology
network, have formalized the composition of the committee that will
select the new integrated library system (ILS) which will support future
WRLSWEB operations. The committee consists of Bridget Christenson
(Hatch Public Library), Charles Clemence (WRLS), Deb Dagnon (La Crosse
Public Library), David Goldfein (La Crosse Public Library), Peggy Klein
(Sparta Free Library), Chris McArdle Rojo (La Crosse County Library),
Karyn Schmidt (Ettrick and Taylor Libraries), and Rita Wachuta-Breckel
(Lawton Memorial Library).
David Goldfein
and Deb Dagnon will be representing both LPL and broader WRLSWEB-wide
concerns. Charles Clemence will represent the needs of the WRLS
administration as well as the overall resource sharing focus of the
regional system. Chris McArdle Rojo will represent the five
branches of the county library network. Each of the other library
directors on the committee will be accountable to a group of WRLSWEB
members, in addition to their own library, from whom the representative
will gather ideas and concerns and to whom she will report on
discussions and progress. Those groups are as follows:
Bridget
Christensen: Alma Public Library, Elroy Public Library, Mondovi
Public Library, Necedah Memorial Library, New Lisbon Memorial Library,
and Wonewoc Public Library.
Peggy Klein:
Black River Falls Public Library, Cashton Public Library, Kendall Public
Library, Norwalk Public Library, and Wilton Public Library.
Karyn Schmidt:
Arcadia Free Public Library, Blair-Preston Public Library, Galesville
Public Library, Strum Public Library, and Shirley M. Wright Memorial Library.
Rira
Wachuta-Breckel: Bekkum Memorial Library, Hillsboro Public Library,
Knutson Memorial Library, McIntosh Memorial Library, and Ontario Public
Library.
The committee will
have its first organizational meeting in late April or early May. A
target date for a decision is July 2009, with a tentative implementation
of the new ILS in January 2010. While these dates sound ambitious, they
are designed to keep the process in motion; if additional time is needed
to assure the best result, the committee will adjust its timeline.
