Eagles4kids

By admin, 3 April, 2012, No Comment

Have you seen the eagles4kids.com website? Now is the time to check out this great site, created by the 3rd and 4th grade students in Mr. Lawrence’s class at Blair-Taylor Elementary School.  Thanks to a camera mounted above the nest near Beaches Corner, anyone can watch a live stream of activity by the resident eagles Larry & Lucy.  It’s a very exciting time, as we wait for the two eggs in the nest to hatch (probably around April 6th)!

With the help of students from Mr. Lawrence’s class, the library has set up a table display with photos and other information about Larry and Lucy.  You can also learn more about the eagles by going to the eagles4kids.com website.  Just click on the eagle image above for a quick link or look for the link in the resources listed at the bottom of this page.  Once there you will have access to videos, pictures, daily updates, and lots of amazing eagle facts.

Don’t forget to visit their Facebook page!

The Blair Brownie troop will be collecting new and used children’s books at the library until March 31st.  If you have any children’s books appropriate for kids through second grade, you can drop them off at the library.  The Brownies chose to share their love of reading by collecting books for others and will also be participating in some other great reading activities at the library in the near future.  Please support these girls with your generous donations!

Genealogy and the 1940 U.S. Census

"The Census Taker" by Norman Rockwell

I recently attended an interesting and fun workshop on genealogy, organized by Winding Rivers Library System and presented by Megan Isely of LaCrosse Public Library Archives.  Thanks to Megan I’ve learned how to investigate my family tree using databases offered by our library system, such as Ancestry Library Edition and HeritageQuest as well as many other free websites.  Users can search a great variety of records and documents, including U.S. census reports, vital records, and immigration and church records.  Both Ancestry Library Edition and HeritageQuest are available for free through the library.  While you must be at the library to access the Ancestry Library Edition, HeritageQuest is available  at home through the BadgerLink resource at the bottom of this page.  If you have any questions about using these resources, please ask.  We love to share this information!

While at the workshop, we also learned about the upcoming release of the 1940 United States census.  This information  has been unavailable to the public for 72 years in order to protect people’s privacy.  Genealogists are eagerly anticipating the release of this information and are counting down the days until April 2nd.  For more information about the 1940 census release, just click on the image above to link to the National Archives website.

If you’ve never looked into your family tree before, now is a great time to branch out and take advantage of  your library’s many resources.

Favorite Book of 2011

By admin, 23 January, 2012, No Comment

What was your favorite book of 2011?  Did you read something that you just had to tell others about?  Was there a book you found that you couldn’t put down? We would like to know what your favorite book of 2011 was.  Use the “Contact Us” link at the top of this page to tell us more about a book or books you love.  Feel free to provide a brief summary and/or review telling us why you chose this title.  We will post some of your feedback on the library website.

My favorite book of 2011 had to be Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption by Laura Hillenbrand.  This is a perfect example of a non-fiction book that reads like fiction. Here is a summary of the book from the author’s website:

On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood.  Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared. It was that of a young lieutenant, the plane’s bombardier, who was struggling to a life raft and pulling himself aboard.  So began one of the most extraordinary odysseys of the Second World War.

The lieutenant’s name was Louis Zamperini.  In boyhood, he’d been a cunning and incorrigible delinquent, breaking into houses, brawling, and fleeing his home to ride the rails.  As a teenager, he had channeled his defiance into running, discovering a prodigious talent that had carried him to the Berlin Olympics and within sight of the four-minute mile.  But when war had come, the athlete had become an airman, embarking on a journey that led to his doomed flight, a tiny raft, and a drift into the unknown.

Ahead of Zamperini lay thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, a foundering raft, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft, and, beyond, a trial even greater.  Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would answer desperation with ingenuity; suffering with hope, resolve, and humor; brutality with rebellion. His fate, whether triumph or tragedy, would be suspended on the fraying wire of his will.

In her long-awaited new book, seven years in the making, Laura Hillenbrand writes with the same rich and vivid narrative voice she displayed in her blockbuster bestseller, Seabiscuit.  Telling an unforgettable story of a man’s journey into extremity, Unbroken is a testament to the resilience of the human mind, body, and spirit.”

Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand is available through the library in your favorite formats, including large print and audio.  Search the catalog or ask the librarian to request a copy for you.  Happy reading in 2012!

Hat & Mitten Drive Wraps Up

By admin, 4 January, 2012, No Comment

Thanks to the incredible generosity of our patrons and community, the library’s 2011 hat and mitten drive was a great success.  Over 100 items were collected, giving us our best drive ever!  So many generous people brought in new and handmade items to help keep small (and not so small) hands warm this winter.  All donations will be given to the Blair-Taylor Elementary School and the New Horizons shelter of Trempealeau county.  THANK YOU to all of the generous people in our community!

Holiday Tea & Handbell Concert

By admin, 15 December, 2011, No Comment

Get in the holiday spirit on Wednesday, December 21st from 2-3 p.m. at our Holiday Tea and handbell concert.  Enjoy the sounds of the season with the Blair-Taylor High School Handbell Choir as they wrap up their mini-tour of the Coulee Region with a special performance at the library.  This group of talented teens has been working on their Christmas songs since September, with early morning practices and much hard work and dedication.  Directed by Karla Hulne, these musicians have performed at local churches, Valley View Mall, and  the Rotary Lights display in LaCrosse.  They have also been interviewed at school by News Channel 8 and will appear on their morning show live on Friday, December 16th at 6:00 a.m.  Please support these talented musicians by attending this concert.  It truly is a beautiful way to celebrate the holiday season.  Enjoy some hot chocolate and Christmas cookies as well and sign up for a door prize!
