First Teen Movie Night is Thursday the 15th

dadvsstepdad 6th grade through young adult are invited to join us for Teen Movie Night on Thursday, September 15th. We will be watching “Daddy’s Home”. The movie is rated PG-13. Kids do not have to be accompanied by an adult, but if there is any misbehavin’, an adult will be required for future attendance at TMN.

Children younger than 6th grade can attend IF A PARENT attends and sits with the child the entire time (no running amok allowed) 🙂

Popcorn will be served; byo Soda or Juice!

Ordinary GraceTHIS WEEK Wednesday at 7 p.m.: Book Discussion about William Kent Krueger’s “Ordinary Grace” which has been our Vernon County Libraries’ Summer Read-Along!

The 6 copies we’ve had circulating around have been very popular; if you’re one of those who’ve read the book, come Wednesday for the discussion and join in!

AND NEXT week (already!?! Where has the summer gone??) Thursday the 25th, meet the author at the Viroqua Elementary School’s Cafetorium, 115 N. Education Ave. in Viroqua. Doors open at 6:00, program starts at 6:30 p.m. Refreshments & book signing to follow. This is a FREE Event sponsored by the Vernon County Libraries!

Today for our Summer Program, we watched some YouTube videos showing the microscopic things in ocean, pond and tap water! Then we used a small hand-held microscope to look at pond water, fishtank water, tap and bottled water here! In addition, kids brought in various things they wanted to look at. Week 6 of “Sink Your Teeth Into A Good Book” has us celebrating Spongebob & Mermaids! The 2nd Spongebob Movie, “Sponge Out of Water” is our movie of the week! We will be showing it Wednesday & Thursday this week at 3 p.m. with snacks~ Stop in to enter a drawing for our Spongebob prizes too! Keep on a Reading! Beat the Heat at the Library!!!

Starting this weekend, on Saturday at 2:00 p.m., meet local writer Jason Crager and hear him talk about his book of short stories titled “Unbridled Humanity”. Light refreshments will be served.
20160608_162126_resized“Sink You Teeth Into A Good Book” is starting up on TUESDAY, JUNE 14th. At 10:00 a.m., all ages are welcomed to join us for a water party in the parking lot! Beware: the water will be colored, so don’t wear anything you’re not willing to get wet & colored! Also, color a bookbag to tote your summer reads around, and pick up a reading log to track your minutes! Prizes for readers at the end of the program, including special MEDALS for the TOP 3 readers of the summer!!
20160608_162105_resizedEVERY TUESDAY after that at 10:00 a.m. we’ll have some fun times with ocean-themed programs! All ages are welcomed at the programs, but they are planned with the 4-10 year olds in mind. But hey, all of us have a little kid inside, so join us!!
WEDNESDAYS from 3 to 5 is KID HANG OUT here at DPL. We’ll have Snack & games or movies. Starts June 15th! Meant for 5th grade & up, but younger kids can come if supervised.20160608_161818_resized
20160608_162004_resizedBE A SEA-WEEDER! We have our wall of algae up & running now & it’s KIDS VS. ADULTS here all summer long! All reading that’s tracked and reported by both groups will earn 1″ of SEAWEED growth per 1 hour of reading! Let’s SEA who can get their seaweed to grow the most!!!!!!
20160608_162036_resizedSATURDAY JUNE 18th is, of course, the first (of many, we hope) Winneshiek Landing Days here in De Soto! Cottonwood Park will be busting with all sorts of vendors, fun & history. In addition, at the LIBRARY we will have a bike safety skills presentation at 11:00 AND we will be honoring ‘International Knit In Public’ day from 12:00 to 2:00. Bring along your knitting or crocheting and a lawn chair (if you don’t want to use a folding chair). We’ll sit out and enjoy the nice weather and refreshments. Indoors if rainy.
And our Vernon County Read-Along is coming along well; our 7 copies of “Ordinary Grace” by William Kent Kruger are going out as fast as they come back in! August 18th will be our local book discussion on the book and August 25th will be the author presentation in Viroqua! DPL will be hosting local writer Jason Crager who will discuss his book of short stories, Unbridled Humanity: A Collection of Disturbing Tales, available on amazon.com. He will have copies available for purchase at the event as well.
