Save even more money at the Library:
Join us Thursday, March 15th at 6pm for our first Common Cents Coupon Exchange Program. As prices increase, everyone is looking for ways to save money. Bring in your already clipped coupons and have fun exchanging and meeting people with the same thrifty attitudes as yourself. We hope this will be a well attended program and will be able to continue once a month. Make challenges and learn ways to save money.
With the new automated system Illuminar established, overdue and lost items are becoming even more expensive than before. The amount of staff time in making calls for reminders has always been an enormous cost to us. But now we get charged for every automated call or mailer that goes out to households with overdue items. Last month’s bill was $157. This is money that could have been used to purchase new materials for our library. So again, please return your items when they are due , or you can always call in and have them renewed over the phone, if no one else has requested the item.
The staff of the New Lisbon Memorial Library is always looking for ways to save money so, if you have any questions or concerns please call us.

Early Reading Memorial Given to The New Lisbon Library
For 30 years Norma Fulton was a First Grade teacher for the New Lisbon School District. This month, her family has generously given an Early Reading Memorial in her name. With this donation, the Library was able to purchase 30 new Dr. Seuss books just in time to celebrate his birthday on March 2nd. Theodor Seuss Geisel was a pioneer in children’s literature. By using repeating words, rhyming sentences and lively characters, his books have made learning to read fun and entertaining. With this gracious memorial, Mrs. Fulton has continued her career in teaching for many more years to come.
If a person, family, organization or business are wondering how they could help their public library, we are still selling bricks (Legos) for $75 in honor of our 75th Anniversary of New Lisbon maintaining a municipal library. Your name will be added to our poster and it will be documented in a book to be kept at the Library for historiaal purposes. The amount of support we have been receiving from the community has been very humbling. Thank you everyone for your help. The funds generated from our fundraising events will be deposited in an account set up for future remodeling and expansion needs.
For the biography lovers, the library has subscribed to a new magazine called “Current Biographies”. This monthly magazine profiles between 15 and 20 politicians, athletes, businessmen, and entertainers. This and many other titles are at your library and available for check-out.

Come in any time during the day, read quietly, play games and listen to area citizens read and share their favorite book when they were growing up.

New Lisbon Library Begins Construction
Yes, our first brick for our $75 for 75 years has been sold. We have a mock building set up at the library made of 1,000 Legos. We will be building another one right beside it as bricks (Legos) are sold. If we achieve our goal of selling all 1,000 bricks, we will have made $75,000 this year to be put into our future remodeling and expansion fund. Each person, business or family will have their name displayed on a poster at the library and then documented in our $75 for 75 year book to be kept at the library for historical purposes. Fundraising events will be going on throughout the year, so stop in or check out our website for further happenings.
If it weren’t for volunteer efforts, the library would not be able to grow. We have regular volunteers, the Friends of the Library Group and a great Library Board that spend time throughout the month with no compensation other than to help their community in supporting it’s municipal library. So please, we are asking anyone who would be interested in helping throughout this exciting year to contact us. It is a wonderful group of people to work with and to share memorable experiences.
Trip to India.
On the evening of Thursday, Feb 9th at 6:30pm, Don and Sharon Rosine will be giving a presentation on their latest trip of humanitarian efforts to India. They are a wealth of valuable information and eagerly give us firsthand account on bringing a different country and its culture to our community. As always, these are free, informative presentations and everyone is invited and encouraged to attend.

If you would like to help with any of the events, please call or stop in and join the fun. When you come into the Library, see what 1,000 legos looks like. We have made up a mock building using 1,000 legos. We will be selling individual Legos for $75. Throughout the year we will be trying to build a replica of our mock building. Businesses, families and individuals are encouraged to have your name documented in the $75 for 75 years book to be kept for historical purposes.

Each day the Library helps people dream, dare, and discover knowledge, skills and abilities making New Lisbon a better place to live, work and play. We are committed to being a vital resource center for the community by providing equal access to information, materials and services. With our expanding collection, an increasing circulation count and more services requested from the community. In 2009, with a generous donation, the New Lisbon Memorial Library Board set up a New Library Building Fund. The Library Board has studied in depth different ways for raising money for a new library building without putting further burden upon the tax payers. For people wishing to increase their support to the library, private individuals, businesses and organizations will be given a philanthropic opportunity to…create a legacey, enhance property values, continue to inspire life long learning, help provide a better educated workforce that will attract more JOBS to the area.

Timeless classics that have been adapted to retain the integrity of the original, are being added to our collection. Struggling readers can now enjoy titles such as Jane Eyre, Call of the Wild, and White Fang. Turn off the television, enjoy a meal together, and have a family read night. These books are also ideal for reading out loud to grade school children.
Our patrons come up with the best questions, and I am so glad they ask. The latest one that must be on a lot of people’s mind is, “Do you think that e-books will eliminate libraries?” As a matter of fact, e-books have made libraires even more popular. While purchasing books of any kind can cost a huge amount of money, you can download popular titles from your library for FREE. Just like all the rest of our materials.
When I started working at the New Lisbon Memorial Library 12 years ago, someone asked me, “Are computers going to eliminate libraries?”. We have embraced computers and look where we are today. Our usage of computers has soared throughout the years. The WI-FI access has been increasingly appreciated while saving an enormous amount of money for patrons.
We have migrated our computer system to a new and user friendly software system called Illuminar. It will take us all a little time to get familiar with the new look and search fields, but in time we know that everyone will be searching for materials way beyond the parameters of our old system.
Sincerely,
Deanna Rosier/Director

In the Summer I enjoy catching up on young adult fiction materials. “Long Drive Home”, written by Will Allison, will be put on my favorites list for recommendation. A timeless story about the importance of taking responsibilities for your own actions and the harming effects it can lead to if you don’t. Glen Bauer, by all accounts, is a loving father and husband. Driving his 7 year old daughter home from school and one wrong move set off a chain of events that will cause him to lose everything he holds dear. Beautifully written with a strong message for every young adult.
As we all look to the future, in these economically challenging times, it is my job as the Director to look for ways in which we can continue to provide a high level of services while prices continue to rise. We will be asking for your respect in returning library materials in a reasonable amount of time. The staff spends a lot of quality time and resources in retrieving overdue and lost items. In the near future I will be approaching our library board with a new overdue policy. In the past we have made phone calls and written reminder letters to have our materials returned. When our requests go unanswered, we find it difficult to provide access of materials to other patrons waiting for items they would enjoy. Across the country the subject of stolen or lost library materials is being addressed more aggressively. Bigger libraries have found it necessary to hire collection agencies, while smaller libraries have been using their police department’s to issue citations. Which again is just using more of our hard working taxpayers’ dollars. I don’t believe that a library should be a place of punishment, but I also feel that I am a steward of the materials purchased by the community and it is my responsibility to decide between overdues or theft of library materials.
Our Library wants to keep you as a patron in good standing. Return your books. Settle your fees. Take responsibility for your actions.
As a courtesy, we will be posting our new overdue policy in the library and on our website.
Sincerely,
Deanna Rosier/Director

Part of my job as being Director of a public library is to inform citizens on the importance and structure of how the library works. A Library provides access to information, materials, and services that support and enrich personal lives, careers, and businesses in the community. While some citizens may not have the resources for current educational and entertainment materials, they are sure to locate them at their public library. From having high speed internet to current fiction, non-fiction books, e-books, newspapers, magazines and movies obtainable, everyone has access to educate themselves so we can all live in a society that supports democracy. Having a well educated community will only provide nourishment for our society.
With the Summer comes an increase in our geneology questions. I have met some of our founding fathers’ present relation and have enjoyed their enthusiasm when they have discovered a treasure of information that we have stored at the New Lisbon Memorial Library.
We have seen an increase in our services and patronage throughout the years and our statistics back our accomplishments. 120 children in our community have signed up for our summer reading program. They have checked out over 2,000 books and have surpassed our goal.
In the month of June patrons’ used our public access computer’s a total of 502 times. We have provided them with technical support, while some have applied for jobs, made resumes, cover letters, corresponded with loved ones, booked airline tickets and did research on medical questions. The library has brought people into our community traveling on the interstate for use of our WI-FI services. Our friendly staff is always willing to give directions to places to eat and visit while in New Lisbon.
A library is a vital institution to every community, and just imagine a society without a continuing education system.
Library Director,
Deanna Rosier
